Preguntas frecuentes
Can I reprogram a 4694 SureOne keyboard for my own POS?
Yes — 4694 keyboards expose their key matrix via a documented protocol, and several open-source utilities (and IBM's own original tools) can remap individual keys, define macros and load custom layouts. Be aware that some keyboards ship with the keys legended for specific industries (grocery, hospitality) and re-legending requires either replacement keycaps or a stick-on key overlay.
How do I clean a POS keyboard without damaging it?
Power down, then dust with compressed air. For sticky residue on the keycaps, a damp microfiber cloth with mild dish soap is safe; avoid alcohol on the legend printing. For deep cleans, most POS keyboards (Cherry-based especially) allow keycap removal with a keycap puller — pull, soak in warm soapy water, air-dry. Never spray liquid directly into the keyboard.
Do I need a programmable keyboard or a standard PC keyboard?
It depends on the POS application. Cloud-based POS (Square, Shopify, Lightspeed) treats the keyboard as standard PC input — any USB keyboard works. Legacy or specialist retail POS (Toshiba/IBM 4690, NCR Counterpoint) often expects specific scancode patterns or relies on dedicated function keys for cash drawer kick, void, no-sale and report functions; a programmable POS keyboard saves significant configuration time.
What's a key-lock and do I need one?
Key-lock terminals (often 3- or 4-position rotary switches) let a manager unlock supervisor-only functions like price overrides, voids and till opens. They are required by audit policy in many large retail chains and most hospitality enterprise POS. If your operation tracks supervisor approvals by physical key turn, you need a key-lock keyboard or a standalone key-lock module.
