Epson TM Receipt Printers Compared: Which Model to Choose (T88, T20, m30, U220) and Which Parts Wear

A buying guide to the Epson TM receipt-printer range β€” T88VII vs T20 vs m30 thermal models, the TM-U220 impact printer for kitchens, how to pick by deployment, and the wear parts (printhead, cutter, roller) you'll replace.

The quick chooser

Epson’s TM family is the default receipt printer for a huge share of the world’s tills β€” but β€œan Epson TM” spans a budget single-till unit, a high-volume workhorse, a compact tablet printer and a kitchen impact printer. Pick by what the lane actually does:

Match the model tier to the workload. The split that matters most: thermal for front-of-house, impact (U220) for the kitchen.

Here’s the lineup decoded into the roles each model plays:

The thermal models compared

The three thermal tiers cover most retail and hospitality. They print the same 80 mm receipt β€” the difference is speed, size and price:

The TM-U220 impact printer (and its A/B/D variants)

The TM-U220 is the odd one out β€” and the right one out. It’s an impact(dot-matrix) printer, not thermal, which is exactly why it belongs in the kitchen: impact print survives heat, steam and grease, and can print multi-part forms, where thermal paper would darken and go blank on a hot pass.

Its three variants trip people up, so here’s the distinction:

VariantAutocutterNotes
TM-U220AYesLarger; includes a journal take-up; not wall-mountableβ€”
TM-U220BYesCompact body with autocutterβ€”
TM-U220DNo (tear-bar)Same as B but no cutter β€” lowest costβ€”
A = journal take-up; B = compact with cutter; D = no cutter, cheapest. Otherwise B and D are essentially the same printer.

Choosing by deployment

Walk your site through this short path to land on the right TM model:

  1. 1

    Kitchen or front-of-house?

Hot/humid/greasy kitchen or back-of-house? Go impact: TM-U220 (pick A/B/D by cutter and journal needs). Front-of-house retail/hospitality? Continue with a thermal model.
  2. 2

    How busy is the lane?

High daily volume and peak rushes call for the fast TM-T88VII. A quieter single till is well served by the budget TM-T20.
  3. 3

    Tablet or space-constrained?

Running a tablet/cloud POS or tight on counter space? The compact TM-m30 series fits best, with wireless connectivity built in.
  4. 4

    Confirm the interface

Make sure the model/variant offers the connection your POS needs (USB, serial, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth). See our interface guide if you need to choose or change it.

The wear parts you'll replace

TM printers are long-lived because the parts that wear are replaceable. Match each to the exact model and variant:

PartSymptom / note
Thermal printheadFaint or missing dots in print (thermal models)β€”
AutocutterJams or won't cut cleanlyβ€”
Platen rollerFeed problems, smudging, uneven printβ€”
Ribbon (TM-U220)Faded impact print β€” replace the ribbon firstβ€”
Impact printhead (TM-U220)Missing columns/pins after the ribbon is goodβ€”
Power supplyDead / intermittent β€” see PSU guideβ€”
Faint print = head (or ribbon on the U220); won't cut = cutter; feed issues = roller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Epson TM printer should a small shop buy?
For a single till with moderate volume, the budget TM-T20 line (e.g. TM-T20III) is the value pick β€” it has the interfaces most POS systems need at the lowest price. If you want a compact, modern unit for a tablet/mPOS setup, the TM-m30 series (m30II/m30III) is small and connectivity-rich (USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). Step up to the TM-T88VII only when you need top speed and high daily volume.
What's the difference between the TM-T88VII and the TM-T20?
Both are 80 mm thermal receipt printers, but they sit at different tiers. The TM-T88VII is the high-performance workhorse β€” very fast, built for high-volume lanes, with broad interface options. The TM-T20 is the entry-level, budget model: still capable (around 200 mm/s with USB/serial/Ethernet depending on variant) but aimed at small businesses with moderate printing. If your lane prints all day at peak, choose the T88VII; if it's a quieter single till, the T20 saves money.
Is the TM-m30 a good choice for a tablet POS?
Yes β€” the TM-m30 series is purpose-built for compact and mPOS setups. It has a small footprint, a modern modular design, and connectivity that suits tablets and cloud POS (USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth across the m30/m30II/m30III). If your counter is space-constrained or your POS runs on a tablet, the m30 family is usually the best fit over a full-size T88.
When do I need the TM-U220 instead of a thermal printer?
Choose the TM-U220 when you need impact (dot-matrix) printing β€” most commonly in a kitchen or any hot, humid or greasy environment where thermal paper would darken and become unreadable. It also prints multi-part forms. It's the standard kitchen/back-of-house receipt printer. For front-of-house retail, a thermal model is faster and quieter.
What's the difference between the TM-U220A, U220B and U220D?
They're variants of the same impact printer. The TM-U220A is larger and includes a take-up (journal) device and can't be wall-mounted; the TM-U220B and TM-U220D are essentially the same as each other except the D has no autocutter (tear-bar only). So choose A if you need a journal take-up, B if you want an autocutter in a compact body, and D if you don't need a cutter and want the lowest cost.
What parts wear out on an Epson TM printer, and can I replace them?
The common wear parts are the thermal printhead (on thermal models), the autocutter, and the platen roller β€” all replaceable. A thermal head that prints faint or has missing dots is the usual culprit for poor print; an autocutter that jams or won't cut is the next; the platen roller affects feed and print quality. On the TM-U220 impact printer, the ribbon and printhead are the consumables. Match the part to the exact model and variant.
